Textile Teachers:
Anni Albers
Albers mastered technical and artistic aspects of weaving, pushing textiles beyond their conventional role. When she and Josef Albers fled Nazi Germany and joined Black Mountain College in I933, she developed a groundbreaking curriculum that emphasized experimentation, material exploration, and the conceptual potential of weaving.
Her teaching philosophy encouraged students to think beyond patterns and function, treating textiles as a form of artistic expression. She also shared her knowledge widely through lectures, essays, and her influential book On Weaving (I965), which became a foundational text for textile artists and designers. Through her process of blending historical techniques with modernist ideas and encouraging hands-on learning, Albers reshaped textile education and cemented her legacy as one of the most influential textile teachers of the zoth century.
